The joint exhibition is an activity that offers an informative point of view for the public towards schizophrenic rehabilitants that they are generally not isolated from art. The rehabilitants can interact directly through creative processes based on the reactions of the patients. They can also create works that define borders of the world inside and outside, surface and depth, as well as self and others. They present unpredictability in visuals, forms, lines, nuances and many more thanks to their ability in extraordinary phantasy.

In creating their works, the Outsider Artists in commonly depict their naïve trait, creating visuals of the development of their inner self and imagination. In such cases, they feel content with their spontaneous and as is works. Yet, they continue to explore their isolated self in the disturbed dimensions through the strokes of their brushes. Thus, the value of a work in general cannot be cut off from knowledge in art and the life of an individual, yet it also can also convince us that experience, surroundings, media and other variables can be great influence.

When entering the Galeri Cipta III, Taman Ismail Marzuki, we will be greeted with names such as John Medethen with the title “skizo A4”. It is a normal visual but it conveys a very imaginative presentation. John builds assumptions through an A4 paper with slightly blurred texts. Lili Suwardi’s work is different in the sense that the work titled ‘jendela masa kecil’ (childhood window) is an illustration of her efforts in seeing the outside world filled with many playgrounds. Although the main subject is a person peering out the window longing for the outside world, Lili wants to convey her longing to her surroundings. Other creative works are no less fascinating, with some built on collaboration on canvas. A painting title Mr. Serotony & Ms. Dopamina is a result of Arie Dabo and Suhari Bunadi duet.

Hospital without wall is a term for works of schizophrenia patients and has a unique power to create awareness of the public on how to deal with the dominance of the logical thoughts. By exhibiting the works across the cultural landscape of the city of Jakarta, such works can create a new channel of expression and communication that shift our perspectives into other forms.

Therefore, the isolated context is not only associated to mental problems but also a direct activity that allows the outsider artists to connect with other works and their intriguing experiences. In the end, an exhibition is a process of communication between works and ideas among them. Communication in this sense is how we see an art exhibition is not only built among the artists but also refers to the issues surrounding the art that are becoming more open to the public.

Such understanding has been the fundamental aspiration of the Jakarta Biennale with the theme Maximum City: Survive or Escape, appreciating artistic forms within the last two years. It serves as a room for the public and public groups to grow in creativity and present such growths to the public. Outsider artists works can be well-represented in the event and create discursive room for isolated groups, allowing exploration towards ideas and creativity of the humankind. It serves as an opportunity for the public to learn in an intimate fashion works that express the importance of reflection upon life experiences. It serves as a message of closeness that can be appreciated through imagination in a special narration process. It marks not only the intimacy in individuals interacting socially, but it is also a guiding process for creativity for isolated and surviving people in the city. (SR/21/10/2011)

The Liverpool Biennial was held on September until   the end of  November, and was divided into three sessions: The International, The Independents and New Contemporaries.

In October 2011, a general lecture by Lewis Biggs was held at the Jakarta Art District, Lower Ground, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town. He spoke about the first Liverpool Biennial which was carried out on the initiative of artists who met in Sydney. Although the Liverpool Biennial at first displayed conventional arts, in the next one, curators encouraged artists to come up with ideas, since biennials usually exhibit existing artworks.

Biggs finally thought about the issues or themes that would be displayed,   that the biennial would   be a dialogue between art, the society and city that can be a constant center for development and innovation. Therefore giving context to creativity and making it a direct, critical and wide platform, involving the  artistic process of local and international artists.

The most important point was to address the issues of the existing socio-cultural practices and how to use them as a foundation for the performance of the city and its’ development. There must be a platform for the exchange of ideas, where the city and people can participate and support wide, integral and inclusive ideas on how to live together as a society, as a condition or an agent to bring about change or improvements in the social structure.

The Liverpool Biennial invited artists that displayed various artworks and different cultures, to encourage individuals or the society to participate in developing the city. This meant that they were not merely offered these different artworks, but it also allowed them to communicate actively. This is where they can educate one another on how to become active citizens.   A condition where people can think about how they can live together as a society. Biggs’ general lecture is a starting point to rethink the efforts of art empowerment in the society.  (SR/10/11/2011).

The process of literary reading (according to A. Teeuw) means to give meaning to a particular text that we choose or is given to us, that requires the knowledge of complex and various code systems.  The three codes:  language code (grammar and vocabulary), cultural code (that is connected with the overall writing, feel and intention of the text, and literature in a certain environment) and literary code (that deals with the prevailing literary norms).

At the opening ceremony held at Galeri Cipta III, Ayu Utami said that through this workshop: “We can develop the Indonesian language as a discourse of the developing languages of the world, amid the local language that we have”

This workshop invites those who are interested in the literary world such as teachers, students, the public and many more. Through this event participants are encouraged to share their knowledge on literary reading through interpretations, expressions, vocals and body movements.

There are 35 participants who come from various educational backgrounds, but are highly interested in literature and cultural texts. The results of this event will also be documented on video and audio, and will be released.  These participants are expected to do literary readings well enough, to be appreciated by the public.

Therefore each participant is requested to read out some works of Indonesian literature.  In the first session of the workshop, they are divided into two groups:  public and teachers.

The teacher’s group, starts off with the sharing of experiences, followed by the mentoring of realists literary works of the 1950’s, as reading references for some of the participants. A few expressed their experiences on literary reading, where the listeners responded in different ways.

While those in the public group focused on body language during the reading. Apart from that, they looked at the audience’s response, and practiced reading literature starting from theater scripts, poems and many more.

This workshop has been held on every Saturday starting from September 17- October 8 2011, from 2:00-6:00pm, four times a week. It is part of a range of Literary Biennale activities and put together as a parallel event for the Jakarta Biennale, in cooperation with the Salihara Community and Jakarta Arts Centre.

Blues is a manifesto of the heart’s voice. When human rights are oppressed, liberty robbed, or democracy stained, it becomes a seeping language breaking through foolishness and speechlessness.
