KENCAN TARI 2008 DAN GELAR KOREOGRAFI KOTA

Kencan Tari (Dance Date) was a workshop on the role of dramaturgy in choreography, or when dramaturgy made an intervention in the process of choreography. The participants of the workshop—13 choreographer, with 7 participants from Solo, 2 from Yogyakarta, 2 from Padang Panjang, and 2 from Jakarta—were introduced to this approach in a week-long workshop with Tang Fu Kuen, a dramaturge from Thailand.

In the workshop, the choreographers were giventhemes of urban issues to be used for the basis of their work. Proposals for the works would be selected, and the selected ones would be presented in the Dance Date performance on an unspecified date.

The Dance Date took place on November 24 – 30, 2008, at the PKBI House in Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta, and held by the Committee of Dance of the Jakarta Arts Council. Beside the Dance Date event, there will be a City Choreography performance, which is an event that provides a space for Indonesian contemporary choreographers to talk about urban issues. The main fare will be the performance of four selected choreography works. Alongside the performances, there will also be a Street Dance competition, as a typical urban phenomenon.

The schedule for the City Choreography performance is as follows:

· February 24, 2009 at Bakoel Koffie Senopati/Ark Gallery. Choreographer: Yola Yulfianti

· February 25, 2009 at the Plaza of the Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Complex. Choreographer: Fitra Airiansyah

· February 26, 2009 at the Plaza of the Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Complex. Choreographer: Retno Sulistyorini

PESTA SASTRA JAKARTA : SASTRA DI RUANG KOTA

Literature might have a reputation to be exclusive, enjoyed by only a few people. The program of “Sastra di Ruang Kota” (Literature in the City), one of the events held in conjunction with Jakarta Biennale 2009 presented by the Jakarta Arts Council, is expected to counter this reputation. Quotes as well as fragments of poems and prose are presented in three forms: stickers, T-shirts, and mural works painted at the ten busiest spots of the city.

The event uses fragments of works by such poets as Chairil Anwar, Sapardi Djoko Damono, SitorSitumorang, Arifin C. Noer, Ajip Rosidi, Yudhistira ANM Massardi, Toeti Heraty Noerhadi, F. Rahardi, Toto Soedarto Bachtiar, and Eka Budianta. There are also quotes from short stories and novels by Hamsad Rangkuti, Afrizal Malna, Firman Muntaco, Misbach Yusa Biran, and Pramoedya Ananta Toer. News from old Jakarta is also presented, taken from the now-defunct newspapers of Keng Po, Bintang Betawi, and Neratja.

PROGRAM LAUNCHING

The event was launched on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Present at the launching event were, among others, the Chairman of the Jakarta Arts Council, Marco Kusumawijaya, and the Head of the Agency of Tourism and Culture of the Local Government of the Special Capital Territory of Jakarta, Arie Budhiman. Members of the literati were also present, for example Rosihan Anwar, Goenawan Mohamad, and the poet of the Generation ’45, Sitor Situmorang. People flocked to the event held at the Menteng Park, Central Jakarta. Three hundred T-shirts with faces of Indonesian authors, distributed freely to the first 300 visitors, quickly disappeared. On that day, the organizer also successfully distributed thousands of stickers to all the audience.

The program then went on leisurely. A number of street poets who usually performed on trains and on the streets presented works by Yudhistira ANM Massardi, Goenawan Muhammad, and Chairil Anwar. Topping off the event was a performance of musical poetry by Nova Ruth. The young artist presented “Jakarta” by Arifin C. Noer and a poem “Dikawinkan Alam” by Sitok Srengenge. Ruth was not only reading the poems, but also luring the audience to enjoy the poems that she presented to the rhythm of Hip Hop. (Annisa Desmiati R.)
